Gaynor’s Journey as a GoTeach Champion

Published on 02/10/2024

Gaynor, a former student of Harlington school, has always had a passion for supporting others and giving back to her community. With a background in Training and Development, she excels in organising sessions and explaining tasks.

My journey as a GoTeach Champion began when I returned to Harlington school. After many years, I eagerly explored the school and memories came flooding back. What particularly stood out was the ‘chill out’ zone in the sixth form area where I fondly remember relaxing with friends.

I have a strong interest in supporting others and this led me to find out more about the DHL UK Foundation and the programmes they offer.  Inspired by my Global Forwarding Ambassador, I decided to participate in local school activities alongside my day job. This opportunity aligned perfectly with my desire to help others grow and develop.

In September 2022, I was approached by Andy Cooke and asked if I would like to become a school Champion. Having previously supported with GoTeach sessions across several schools, I already had a sense of what classroom sessions entailed. Becoming a Champion meant I could inspire others to get involved and create a network of DHL volunteers.

Throughout the process, I received tremendous support from Andy and Erica, which made it easy for me to balance my Champion responsibilities with my day job. I take great pride in being the first Champion for DGF (DHL Global Forwarding) and have established a strong relationship with Harlington School.

Building a relationship with the school did not come without challenges, particularly at a time when the school was going through construction. Alongside this, finding time to manage workload meant that patience and persistence was required. Fortunately, this paid off and my support helped strengthen the connection I had with the school. What’s more, participating in events like ‘Career Future(s) Day’ and ‘Careers Day’ has given me the opportunity to engage with young people from different year groups and this has been extremely fulfilling.

My biggest takeaway from my experience as a Champion is witnessing the “light bulb” moments in students when they actively participate in interactive sessions. These sessions, which are not part of the regular school curriculum, provide invaluable experience and content, especially for students in Year 10 to Year 12.

When DHL colleagues ask me whether they should apply to become a champion, I enthusiastically encourage them to do so. I emphasise how rewarding it is to support others whilst sharing your own life experience and career knowledge. I enjoy networking with colleagues from other business divisions, including Supply Chain and Express colleagues who also attend these GoTeach sessions.

Being involved in GoTeach has allowed Gaynor to share her skills and experience to help young people develop essential life skills that will enhance their future after education. Her dedication to supporting the growth of others is an inspiration to her colleagues and the community she serves.
